According to What The Hell Songfacts, Avril first revealed details of the single in an open letter to fans on her website. She wrote, "My first single off this record is called: 'What The Hell.' This song is the least personal song to me off this album. It's a fun and funny anthem. It has a broad message about personal freedom. It is the most pop track on the record." Avril first stepped onto the pop radar in 2002 with her debut single 'Complicated', a No.3 hit in October of that year. 'What The Hell' was the first single release from her fourth studio album 'Goodbye Lullaby' and was a top twenty hit for the Canadian rock chick in March 2011.
