On “Mask,” Dream reflects about his past fights with mental illnesses like depression and ADHD, while acknowledging how they affect him in his current life. The song’s title plays with the lyrics as a shield hiding Dream’s insecurities while he fights these mental illnesses; he confirmed the title on March 14 when replying to a fan via his third Twitter account, dreamhangout. The day before, Dream first teased his fans that confirmed he was working on a new song via said Twitter account. “Mask” aims for a rock beat while keeping some pop elements from Dream’s collaboration with producers Banrisk and Perish Beats called “Roadtrip.” Following the huge success of this February 2021 hit, “Mask” is the second collaboration between the three people.
