One of three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition of Origins, “Birds” muses on fading memories and a couple’s gradual parting of ways and promises eternal love, using a metaphor of migrating birds; a natural part of life. Likely inspired by Dan Reynolds‘ changing relationship with his wife Aja Volkman, Dan insisted they would remain best friends even after their temporary split. Although not originally a single from the album, the song became a fan favorite, being broadcast on numerous international radio stations and encouraging the creation and release of a remix with Italian singer-songwriter, Elisa. The animated music video, released July 24th, 2019, tells the story of a young girl who inherits the power of flight from her mother. Imagine Dragons are known for their strong stand against bullying, and Dan Reynolds in particular is a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. These truths about self identity are reflected in this video.
