"Saltwater" is a 1991 song performed by English singer, songwriter, and musician Julian Lennon. It was written by Mark Spiro, Leslie Spiro and Julian Lennon. Originally released on the album Help Yourself, it topped the Australian singles charts for four weeks and reached #6 in the UK. Unlike most of Lennon's previous songs, "Saltwater" combines subtle melodies with gentle vocals to bring forward the issues of environmental conservation and world poverty. The lyrics juxtapose the many marvels and feats of human civilization with the death of the natural world, constantly emphasising the passing of time - 'Time is not a friend, 'cos friends we're out of time' The recording features an uncredited George Harrison on lead guitar. An instrumental version (Guitar Duet) of this song was recorded by Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel on their album "The day Finger Pickers Took Over the World".
Lyrics:
[Verse 1] We are a rock revolving Around a golden sun We are a billion children Rolled into one So when I hear about The hole in the sky Saltwater wells in my eyes [Verse 2] We climb the highest mountain We'll make the desert bloom We're so ingenious We can walk on the moon But when I hear of how The forests have died Saltwater wells in my eyes [Chorus] I have lived for love But now that's not enough For the world I love is dying (And now I'm crying) And time is not a friend (No friend of mine) As friends we're out of time And it's slowly passing by Right before our eyes [Verse 3] We light the deepest ocean Send photographs of Mars We're so enchanted by How clever we are Why should one baby Feel so hungry she cries Saltwater wells in my eyes [Chorus] I have lived for love But now that's not enough For the world I love is dying (And now I'm crying) And time is not a friend (No friend of mine) As friends, we're out of time And it's slowly passing by Right before our eyes [Verse 4] We are a rock revolving Around a golden sun We are a billion children Rolled into one What will I think of me The day that I die Saltwater wells in my eyes Saltwater wells in my eyes
