"Daughter" was released in 1993 as the second single from the band's second studio album, Vs. (1993). Although credited to all members of Pearl Jam, it features lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music primarily written by guitarist Stone Gossard. According to the Daughter Songfacts, the song was written from the perspective of a girl with a learning disability called dyslexia and her mother who doesn't understand the condition. The song topped both the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock Billboard charts. The song spent a total of eight weeks at number one on the Mainstream Rock chart. "Daughter" eventually peaked at number 28 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart, becoming the band's first Top 40 single. The song was included on Pearl Jam's 2004 greatest hits album, rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991–2003).
Lyrics:
[Verse] Alone, listless Breakfast table in an otherwise empty room Young girl, violence Center of her own attention The mother reads aloud, child tries to understand it Tries to make her proud The shades go down, it's in her head Painted room, can't deny there's something wrong [Chorus] Don't call me daughter, not fit to The picture kept will remind me Don't call me daughter, not fit to The picture kept will remind me Don't call me [Bridge] She holds the hand that holds her down She will rise above Oooh ooh [Chorus] Don't call me daughter, not fit to The picture kept will remind me Don't call me daughter, not fit to be The picture kept will remind me Don't call me daughter, not fit to The picture kept will remind me Don't call me daughter, not fit to be The picture kept will remind me Don't call me [Outro] The shades go down The shades go down The shades go go...go
